How to Take a Kitchen Faucet Handle Off

Kitchen interior

If you want to change the handle on your faucet, you need to know how to take it off. This process varies from faucet to traditional kitchen tap, depending on the type and manufacturer. Older faucets might have a screw holding the handle in place, but they also may have small pins under the screw that you can remove with pliers. Once you've removed the screw, simply turn the handle clockwise until it comes free.

Use a screwdriver

Using a screwdriver with the correct size, you can use a slot or Phillips head to remove the handle. Alternatively, you can use needle-nose pliers to remove the handle. The key is to be very careful and avoid scratching the surface. If the faucet is stuck, you should contact the manufacturer for more instructions.

Before you attempt to remove the handle, be sure to disconnect any pipes that connect to it. Also, remove any retaining nuts that are holding the faucet body in place. If there are no mounting nuts on the spout, you can use channel-type pliers to remove them. Once the mounting nuts are removed, you can then remove the faucet body from underneath the sink. It may fall out of the sink, so it's a good idea to use thick towels to protect the cabinet from any spills.

Shut off the water supply

Next, shut off the water supply to the faucet. To shut off the water supply, locate the shutoff valve under the sink. Turn the knob clockwise to close the valve. Once the valve is shut off, you may notice a small leak or drip from the faucet handle. If that's the case, loosen the packing nut behind the valve's knob. If the nut is too tight, it won't turn easily.

If you can't remove the handle yourself, you may want to consider hiring a plumber to fix the problem. Plumbers have the tools and experience to take a faucet handle off. They can also inspect the stem to make sure that it is intact. In some cases, the stem may be stripped or cracked. This can make the handle loose and even cause it to spin on its end.

Fix the faucet

Pullout faucets feature two handles for temperature and pressure adjustment. They also have a nozzle that releases water when turned off. This type of faucet is useful if you have a wide countertop or water-free feature area. Generally, the handle will be capped. When the handle is removed, you can fix the faucet. A ball-type faucet handle is harder to remove. In addition to pliers, you may need an Allen screw. In some cases, a penetrating oil applied to the screw can help loosen it. You also need to be careful not to strip the screw's head, as it can strip the head.
